Unilever Greater Caribbean lends a hand to Haiti
Unilever Greater Caribbean contributes US$90,000 in product, cash and employee donations towards relief efforts in Haiti.
Together with Unilever's initial contribution of US$500,000 to the World Food Programme's Relief efforts towards disaster stricken Haiti, the company's Greater Caribbean business has put forward a contribution of US$90,000.
The donation from the Greater Caribbean business comprises employee donations of US$8,000 which consisted of cash and relief items such as food, clothing and medical supplies. The company then doubled the employee contribution adding a further US$16,000 towards efforts aimed at stabilizing and providing relief to the people of Haiti. The majority of these proceeds have gone directly to the UN World Food Programme with whom Unilever shares a global partnership. In kind donations were handed over to the Dominican Republic Red Cross for shipment to Haiti. In addition, Unilever Greater Caribbean donated over US$67,000 worth of product. These mostly comprised food products such as Knorr soups and bouillon cubes, as well as personal care products such as Rexona deodorants and Dove soaps.
Employee Driven
Unilever Greater Caribbean Chairman, Pablo Garrido commented that the business' relief efforts were driven by its employees. "Our people have never hesitated to help those in need. We are a company of heart," he said. Unilever Greater Caribbean has been quick to respond to regional disasters in the past, contributing towards relief efforts in the Dominican Republic and Haiti when a series of hurricanes battered both countries in 2007 and 2008.
